The Eleousa (Virgin of Tenderness) is a type of depiction of the Virgin Mary that represents her compassionate side. She is shown bending to touch her cheek to that of her child, the infant Jesus Christ, who is nestled against her cheek, emphasizing the reciprocal affection and relationship between mother and child.
On the back is a short prayer written in Cyrillic letters, which is however not readable.
This is a piece of jewellery which is often found in the Russian and Greek Orthodox religion.
Each pendant is handcrafted by two brothers, George and Panagiotis, in the picturesque village of Lefkara, in a workshop they have been running since 1968. Our chains are made in Italy.
